Mary Morstan FTW
Not going to say much about the Amanda Abbington thing on twitter because i don’t feel like arguing with whomever could feel offended by my opinion, but I sure as hell am going to share my feelings towards Tumblr in general and the Sherlock Fandom in particular, because I have been feeling a tad uncomfortable about it lately and it has just basically exploded today.
I am strongly divided between love and hate, and both feelings are so mixed together that I can’t feel neither of them on their own.
On one hand I love being part of a community that is this passionate and devoted to something I cherish so much as it is the Sherlock Holmes universe, BBC Series or not. All the literature, the art, the music, the crafts, the cosplay, the meta, etc. are really inspiring and I admire all the dedication, time, and talent that is poured into all of it. Both in references to the canon and on its own, all this things make me proud of being a fan, of spending my time among other fans and even of collaborating myself. I love having people to show my own creations and with whom talk and argue about the show. I like the criticism to the series, I like that the fandom is not passive, that it doesn’t just shallow what it is served, that it complains about what is not of their liking.
I hate the swarming of it all, tough. And this also goes for all of Tumblr. Sometimes is like 90% of the comments I read on this website are written by the same user. I understand the appeal of memes, the allure of gregariousness and the whole sense of belonging thing, but it reaches appalling levels. I may be a Sherlock fan, but I haven’t given my consent to anyone to voice their thoughts in the name of the fandom -and by extension my name. I am not behind abusing every text post with gifs of my favourite series. I am not behind the “zomfg GAAAY” reblogs, I am so.bloddy.not behind death threats to actors on twitter. I hate to feel embarrassed of being a Sherlock fan. And just a year ago I hated it when people talked about the Sherlock fandom as something annoying and embarrassing and dumb, because… what I wanted to call fandom was the art, the fics, the lovely people, the constructive comments. The annoying, hateful part was individuals waving the fandom flag in spite of the rest of us. And I understood then as I understand now what people meant by “I like Sherlock, I dislike the fandom”, but I didn’t want to have to agree with that. But after too much bullshit, as long as fandoms keep behaving and keep being treated as a fucking collective consciousness, count me out. I have my own opinions on subjects and I don’t approve of anyone voicing theirs as common to all of us.
Shame on this website.
TL;DR Fandoms are one of the best things to ever happen to me, but Tumblr is sort of ruining it.
It ended much too soon
